3 Ways to Build a Healthy Culture in UM Clubs and Societies in a Term

Image
Culture is not something that is easily changed. This is especially true, seeing how fast a typical term cycle ends and changes hand to a new team every year – it is scary fast. A hasty term simply means one thing – things come and go quickly, good and bad ones alike. Hence, there are many clubs and societies in the campus that enjoyed a short term spike in success, while many never get to breakthrough in years. Ultimately, this led to the problem where no one would like to take up leadership roles in clubs and societies every year. And if you are experiencing this in your society, it is most likely that you are not alone. Many of the clubs and societies in UM face the same issue as well. All of these inconsistencies and underperformance of clubs and societies boil down to one key aspect: Weak Culture. A weak culture within a club or society can be seen when members are not passionate to support their own initiatives, an unresponsive board of leaderships and the most obvious ...

22 or 23 and Still Studying - The Dilemma in the Transition to Adulthood

Image
As I am approaching my final academic semester in UM, this is an article that I would like to share with everyone that comes across my blog for Form 6/STPM advices and opinions (I started this blog writing about Form 6), my recent contents on education and politics, or maybe just simply because the topic of this article caught your eyes. So technically, I am 23 this year. I studied Form 6/STPM for Pre-U which results in me lagging at least a year behind many of my peers. For the past couple of years I’d seen my peers and even high school juniors graduated and started their full-time career in their respective industries and my relatives starting to step up the ladder in their career. The outcome from witnessing these events, especially the peers same age as me are getting out to the working world, is a mixed and complex feelings on my current state – 23 and still studying while the peers around me are starting to work and earn. As a result, many questions popped through my mind...

Of All, Why the Compromises on Our Education?

Image
The impact of budget cut on public universities is real. Great and inspiring lecturers are not having their contracts renewed, retired lecturers are not replaced and inadequate learning facilities, just to name a few. As a whole in Malaysia’s Budget 2017, Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) faced a 29% allocation cut compared to 2016 from RM13.38 billion to RM9.5 billion. This is also a continuation from the cut from RM15.78 billion in 2015. Of all, UM and UiTM got a 42% cut of RM268 million and 36.16% cut of RM946 million respectively since 2015. Stepping into my final year of study in UM, I recall having our class delayed in the middle of the lecture because of the projector that was not working properly, WiFi speed that would simply slow you down rather than help in increasing your efficiency, no manpower to replace leaving lecturer for a particular subject and most significantly, faculties being asked to generate their own income to sustain themselves. The outcome? A...

STPM Baharu - Retaking, Explained!

Image
Recently I came across a reader's comment in my 'STPM Baharu, Third Semester' article that asked me some questions about retaking : And so, I've decided to write about this issue in this article.  #1 - When will you retake your papers? If there are no any big changes this year, Semester 1 & Semester 2 retake papers should be not long after Semester 3 exam. This means that straight after your Semester 3 papers, you'll still need to prepare for retakes. It went on like this for my year : Sem 3 > Sem 1 Retake > Sem 2 Retake.  As for Semester 3 retake, it'll be a few weeks after Semester 3 results are out , probably in between March and April after you've graduated from Form 6. #2 - When will you able to know your retake results? For Semester 1 & Semester 2 retake, results will be out not long after you received your Semester 3 results .  As for Semester 3 retake, results will be out sometime during the month of Apri...

What To Do - I Am Not Selected for Interview!

Every single year, there will always be STPM students with good results that hope to be called for interview for the entrance into local public universities but in the end turned down by the authorities.  So, what can you do if you are one of the victim?  1. Check First of all, check the courses you applied, are everyone of them required interview? If there are courses that do not require interview, it means that you will still have a chance to enter public universities. Every course you applied require interview? Proceed to no.2 then. 2. Rayuan This is to the ones that failed to get any offer in the end to apply.  "Rayuan: Hanya calon yang gagal mendapat sebarang tawaran sahaja yang layak mengemukakan permohonan rayuan. Rayuan ke IPTA bagi Program Pengajian Lepasan STPM/Setaraf dibuka untuk capaian mulai 12 Ogos 2014 jam 12.00 tengah hari sehingga 22 Ogos 2014" 3. Local/Overseas Private Universities Well, maybe in life when we do not g...

War. Codename: 2014 STPM Second Semester. Status: Start!

Image
Anyeong! Just writing this post to wish every kawan-kawan that will be sitting for Second Semester STPM in a few days time all the best and good luck! Be Careful - Pengajian Am Pengajian Am for second semester is one tricky paper to score. Be very very careful while plotting your graphs/charts/tables because a small keyword that you left out will cost you your results for the paper.  p.s. Remember to bring your colour pencils and protractor ya! My Advice For me, I'll not study until late night before exam, as stuff in our brain tend to go all wrong due to lack of rest. Instead of discussing with friends about the subject before the paper, I would normally prefer to find a quiet place to calm down my nerves (Keep on talking about the subject before exam will most probably cause you to be more nervous).  Best of Luck! So yeah this is indeed a short post dedicated to wish all STPM candidates all the best and good luck! Stay healthy and please, sleep e...

Hello folks it has been some time since my last blog post 'STPM Baharu - The Form 6 College' and it actually became one of my article with the highest view! *claps claps* STPM Baharu 2013 Students Alright, basically I believed that many of us had already have in mind in how we did in our STPM, hence after receiving our result slip on 24/4/2014, whats next? After receiving your result slip, things that you will need to pay attention of is:If you are one of the many that retake your Semester 3 paper/s, you can now update your application should you have anything that you want to change in your application during the First Phase of registration. It is called the Second Phase of registration and it will be opened to all Semester 3 retake students on 2/5/2014 - 6/5/2014.  Free up your time for the month of May and June (and maybe July) because most of the procedures of the UPU/USM intake such as notice of the interview, process of interview and so on will most proba...

STPM Results - The Mindset

Image
The time has come for the STPM 2013/14's batch of STPM students to receive their First Semester's results! Here is a short article that might help you mentally on how to prepare yourself for it - and aftermath of receiving your results. #1 Rule: Expect Nothing This is the only way to prepare yourself mentally, because this is your First Semester's results and there are way too much of different circumstances in STPM. Don't give yourself excess stress by setting a target for yourself before receiving your results (if you wanna do so, you should have done it in the start of the semester and go all in for it anyway). Well, just tell yourself that you have did your best and leave it fate to decide. Hence, expect nothing and when the results turns out to be good then take it as a bonus, you'll definitely happier by this way.  #2 Rule: Know That You Have a Second Chance Well, this thought is definitely not advisable during the semester, as I would always ...

2013 ----> 2014, A New Turning Point

Image
Back in year 2012 when I was deciding whether to enter Form 6 or to do a foundation in media studies in a college in Jaya One, in the end I'd decided to try Form 6 and I remained in Form 6 until the very end of the 1.5 years course.  Planning a fundraise for the down syndrome kids in 12 days Now Form 6 has ended and I've decided that I'll put 'enjoy life' as my first priority instead of academic excellence, yay! Well, not that I didn't have a life in Form 6, but if you went through Form 6 you'll know what I mean. Not long after my Third Semester ended, I've planned a fundraising event for the down syndrome kids by selling homemade gingerbread cookies, the name of the event is 'A Christmas Project : The Joy of Giving'. It was definitely not easy because of the limited time and resources and with some luck and the help from my parents and friends we were able to held it in Sunway Pyramid on 22/12/2013, the Sunday before Christmas. In the e...

STPM Baharu In Depth - Further Maths

Image
This article is an introduction of the subject Further Mathematics in STPM Baharu by a friend of mine. In Form 6, there are very few people that take up Further Maths and I am really lucky to have a friend who took this subject and is willing to share his experience in this subject. Well, read on! Overall STPM FM is introduced for those who has intense interest in math and wish to challenge themselves in STPM. It can be only be taken with Maths (T). Being a 100% written test, you don’t have to do any assignment or project. Since there are less than 30 candidate taking it each year, there are no any reference book selling in the market and no teacher teaching it in school (as far as I know). You can only learn it by yourself or going for tuition. The reference book recommended by MPM is hardly found in normal bookstore. You may order it from MPM or online but they are really expensive (each book cost about RM 200) and you may need 4 different books for the whole STPM. Most of u...

STPM Baharu In Depth - Biology (written by Wai Kent Ng)

Image
This is an introduction of the subject Biology written by my friend, Ng Wai Kent. Wai Kent is one of the top student in CHS that have been achieving fantastic results academically. Also a cheerful and ongoing person in life, his tips in Biology will surely help you in your studies in Form 6! Read it here: Hopefully this brief introduction may give you some ideas while choosing Physics or Biology or both for your STPM. FIRST TERM: Biological Molecules and Metabolism Basically, you are going to revise on what you have learnt in SPM Biology.  You have learnt water, lipids, carbohydrates, cellular components, plasma membrane, enzymes, respiration and photosynthesis when you were in SPM, didn’t you? In additon to this, you are going to learn about eukaryotes and prokaryotes, induced fit hypothesis for enzyme reaction (which differs slightly from lock-and-key), Michaelis-Menten constant for an enzyme-catalysed reaction. The most ‘exciting’ part of this term is all about rememb...

STPM Baharu In Depth - Chemistry (written by Li Tian Low)

Image
This is an introduction of the subject Chemistry in STPM Baharu by my friend Low Li Tian, read on and you will get an idea of what you'll be learning for this subject in Form 6!   Okay , so I’ll start off with chem sem 1 first. Term 1 we’ll be studying about Physical Chemistry , well I personally didn’t like physical chem that’s why I didn’t have much “memories” bout it. Well, through this physical chem, u’ll be studying about electronic Structure of Atoms, chemical bonding , states of matter , reaction kinetics & equilibrium. Chapters about electronic structure of atom & chemical bonding r quite interesting but not for equilibrium (just my opinion). Overall , term 1 chemistry was quite easy , no memorizing work ,u just have to understand the concept. Eg:  phase diagram for a single-component material, exhibiting solid, liquid and gaseous phases Term 2: Inorganic Chemistry . The first 2 chapters r about chemical energetics & elec...
